I was a math nerd before STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) was a thing. I relished science, but math was my true love, especially algebra and what my high school cryptically called “math analysis” (ie, precalculus). My fellow math geeks and I were a competitive bunch, performing some calculations in our heads as we rushed through pencil-and-paper tests for adolescent bragging rights. These shortcuts were soon outlawed by our strictly by the book math teacher who demanded we “show” our work. His unwelcome decree forced us to slow down and examine how we worked the problem. As a result, we became more thoughtful and less error prone. Mr. Sellers’ wise lesson has stuck with me decades beyond the classroom.
