Abstract
Lack of communication during care transitions leads to provider dissatisfaction and
adverse outcomes. The neurosurgical advanced practice providers (APPs) at this institution
reported low satisfaction with handoff between units. The objective of this quality
improvement initiative was to develop a standardized handoff process to improve transitions
of patient care and increase neurosurgical APP satisfaction. The process included
verbal handoff from a neurocritical care APP to a neurosurgery APP and a written transfer
summary. High adherence to the initiative was achieved, with improved provider satisfaction
post-implementation. This quality improvement initiative demonstrated improved APP
satisfaction using a standardized handoff process.
