About Continuing Education (CE)
Each issue of the Journal for Nurse Practitioners includes one article with a continuing education activity.
This educational activity is provided by Nurse Practitioner Alternatives™
Nurse Practitioner Alternatives is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
The authors and the CE providers work together to develop questions and evaluations for each CE activity.
Each CE exercise consists of a single exam with short questions followed by a brief post-test evaluation. To start an exercise, select an exercise below. We recommend that you read the program description before taking a test. You may complete the exercise in one sitting or you may save your work in progress and complete it at a later date. You may create a free personal account to return to your work in progress and track your progress through the program.

RECEIVING CE CREDIT
Credit for the CE activity may be received through one of two ways:
- After reading the article, complete the multiple choice examination and evaluation online. A score of 70% must be achieved to pass the exam. The exam may be taken more than once. A certificate with the credit awarded may be printed from the online website. This CE activity is free if taken online.
- After reading the article, complete the multiple choice examination and evaluation found in the Journal and mail to NPA, PO Box 540, Ellicott City, MD 21041-0540 along with a $10 check made out to Elsevier. A score of 70% must be achieved to pass the exam.

Activating Your Subscription
If you are a journal subscriber but have not activated your online subscription, you will be required to activate it upon successful completion of an exam in order to receive your Certificate of Credit.
Overall objective
Continuing education learning activities are designed to augment the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of nurses and therefore enrich the nurses’ contributions to quality health care.
Target Audience
These activities are designed for nurses and nurse practitioners.
ABOUT OUR EXAM PROCESS
If you get a blank screen when clicking on an exam, you need to enable pop-ups in your browser:
- Scroll to the top and click on the message regarding "pop-ups."
- Agree to allow pop-ups (for this program only) and follow the additional prompts.
- The exam will then appear.
- If your browser is Safari, follow these steps to enable pop-ups : 1) open the Safari window; from the top menu click Safari; Unselect the option (if selected) - "Block Pop-Up Windows."
NOTE: Enabling pop-ups for this CE activity will not enable pop-ups for any other applications.
Notice: The American Nurses Credentialing Commission will change the requirements for certification renewal as indicated on their website:
"Beginning January 1, 2014, all advanced practice nursing certificants (CNS & NP) are required to complete 25 continuing education hours of pharmacotherapeutics as a portion of the required 75 continuing education hours. If an advanced practice nurse chooses to double Category 1, 50 of the 150 continuing education hours must be in pharmacotherapeutics."
JNP has offered pharmacology credits for selected CE activities, but these did not appear on the certificate for CE activities completed online until October 2011. For those who will require this pharmacology credit for previously completed online activities, please download this table to keep with your certificates to document the pharmacology credit earned.
