Circumcision generally is performed during the newborn or adolescent period. An estimated one in six newborn males is circumcised worldwide. In 1992, a reported 60% of male newborns were circumcised in the United States. The exact number of adult males circumcised, however, is not known. Adult male circumcision occurs for multiple reasons, which include medical, social, religious, and personal.1
